  • 1/2 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup black cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease two 8-inch cake pans with parchment liners.
  2. Whisk flour, both cocoa powders, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Beat eggs, sour cream, melted butter, and vanilla in a separate bowl until smooth.
  4. Fold wet ingredients into dry ingredients using a spatula until just combined.
  5. Divide batter evenly between pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Cream softened butter, powdered sugar, and black cocoa; add heavy cream for consistency.
  8. Frost the first layer, top with the second, and cover the entire cake in black frosting.
