Description

This Easy Irish Soda Bread is a quick and delightful addition to any meal. With its crusty exterior and soft, tender crumb, this bread can be enjoyed fresh out of the oven or paired with soups and stews. Made with just a few pantry staples, it comes together in under an hour—perfect for both novice and experienced bakers alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (480g)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda (5g)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (6g)
  • 1¾ cups buttermilk (420ml)
  • 1 cup raisins or currants (150g)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk; stir gently until combined.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly for about 30 seconds.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf about 1½ inches thick and place it on the baking sheet.
  6. Cut a deep X on top of the dough to help it bake evenly.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
