Description

A rich, moist chocolate cupcake topped with a stable, vibrant green buttercream frosting piped to look like a haunted forest.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 34 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Green gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. In a large bowl, cream softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, stirring until just combined.
  6. Divide batter evenly among the liners and bake for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool cupcakes completely on a wire rack before frosting.
  8. Beat 1 cup butter and powdered sugar until smooth; add milk, vanilla, and green food coloring until desired shade is reached.
  9. Pipe tall, irregular swirls of frosting on each cupcake to resemble twisted forest trees.
