Description

A towering, structural chocolate cake carved into a haunted house shape and coated in a glossy dark chocolate ganache.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1.5 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and grease three 8-inch cake pans.
  2. Whisk flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla; beat on medium speed until combined.
  4. Stir in boiling water by hand; the batter will be thin.
  5. Divide batter among pans and bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes completely and level the tops with a serrated knife.
  7. Stack cakes with a thin layer of frosting between them and carve into a house shape.
  8. Heat heavy cream until simmering, pour over chopped chocolate, and let sit for 5 minutes.
  9. Whisk ganache until smooth and pour over the carved cake.
  10. Decorate with cookies or candies once the glaze has set slightly.
