Description

A tiered chocolate cake designed to look like a spooky haunted house, decorated with eerie frosting and colorful Halloween sprinkles.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Black gel food coloring
  • 1/2 cup Halloween-themed sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F (175C) and grease three round cake pans of varying sizes (e.g., 8-inch, 6-inch, and 4-inch).
  2. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes until smooth.
  4. Divide the batter evenly among the pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  6. Beat softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla until fluffy.
  7. Divide the frosting into two bowls. Leave one white and add a tiny amount of black gel coloring to the other to create gray.
  8. Stack the cakes from largest to smallest, spreading a layer of frosting between each tier.
  9. Apply a thin crumb coat of frosting to the exterior and chill for 20 minutes.
  10. Apply the remaining gray frosting in jagged, uneven layers to create the haunted house effect.
  11. Press Halloween sprinkles into the sides and top of the cake before the frosting sets.
  12. Pipe a small door and windows using the white frosting for final details.
